You really cant talk about yoga without referencing Ayurveda.
Some say ayurveda and yoga are sisters.
Some say Ayurveda is the science that supports yoga.
The Sanskrit word Avurevda translates to
“Science of life”
Ayu- meaning life or day to day
Veda-meaning knowing
It is also a traditional system of Hindu medicine, based on the idea of balance in the bodily systems, primarliy using diet, herbal treatment and yogic breathing
Currently Ayurveda is a primary method of healthcare in India
It is not as popular as the modern medicine approach however as it does not produce a super quick response
Ayurveda is a mechanism for healing that is slow, it is intuitive, it focuses primarily on the 5 elements
Air
Water
Space/ether
Earth
Fire
Intuitive meaning what one feels to be true within their own heart, without conscious reasoning
Broken down more specifically for each person based on energies within their individual body and 3 components of health according to this ancient system of medicine:
Diet
Sleep
Abstinence
When it comes to eating, from the ayurvedic perspective, each meal is an opportunity to heal or hurt the physical body.
Each meal a sensory experience.
Each meal a nurturing, nourishing, enjoyable event.
An event that satisfy’s all 5 senses:
Smell
Taste
Sight
Hearing
Touch
Including the range of flavors:
sweet
salty
sour
bitter
pungent
astringent
Try ditching the utensils and eating with your hands, pause and take 3 deep breaths seated or standing upright before each meal, bless your food before it enters your body
Take 3 deep breaths at the end of a meal
Eat with the intention to nourish and heal
Prepare each meal fresh and eat within 2 hours
The frequency of the food we eat matters maybe more than the actual content of the food
